ceiling light problem

i have just wired a new ceiling light as follows
the new light has 3 terminals live neutral and earth but there are 4 wires coming out of ceiling 1red,2 black joined together and 1 black on its own
i have wired the 2black joined together to the neutral,and the red and other black together in the live.this light is on the landing outside bathroom if i switch the landing light on the bathroom light does not work and vice versa any ideas i would be grateful

Before you messed around with it you did make a note of what went where didnt you? Didnt you.... :?:

You said you had 2 blacks joined togther - were they connected to the old light or were they on their own??.

If they were on their own then leave them on their own.

this leaves you with two wires. Red and black red is live to your light and black is live to your light.

Do come back if it was another config - but do say if it works..
 
Are you sure that all 3 blacks were not together, it sounds like someone has spured a neutral from that fitting at sometime to supply another one, which could be the one thats not working...

If you are not sure, get an Electrician to have a look at it..
