Was sent this photo by a family member of their ceiling rose. Light had stopped working (previously working ok for years) it was discovered that the brown supply to the lamp had become detached from the rose so they assumed this was the problem. But after reconnecting it the light is still not working.
Separate matter maybe but the way it is done looks wrong to me, i.e. there is no live supply cable or switch cable connected at the loop in terminals, they are all shoved into the neutral terminal. Obviously seems to have worked but any comments welcome as to what is going on here?
House wiring is old, with rewireable fuse holders.

The loopin system is not always used especially in older houses.

Are you sure the brown wire has been striped properly and is not screwed on to the insulation.

Also note the brown wire should be looped round the flex holder like the blue one is.

Might be loop-in through junction boxes.

Or just a mishmash of different ways of wiring which has growed-like-Topsy over the years.

The only way to find out how it has all been wired is to trace all the wiring.

As for the problem, your relative will need either:

  • a multimeter and an understanding of electrical circuits
or
  • an electrician.

Please let's not have anybody start the let's-try-electrics-by-guesswork foolishness.

problem fixed by replacing 30 year old dimmer switch which had ceased to operate . Some choc block wiring found in ceiling void explains the unusual wiring at the rose.
