does the programmer and boiler have separate electric cables? i ask because i am trying to learn and understand my system! I know the terminal box in the airing cupbaord connects all the components up together in a specific way, ie y-plan system with 3-port mid pos valve, pump, etc. but the electric cable from this terminal box runs down to an unswitched fused spur which is near my boiler, and also 2 other leads run into this same fused spur? i think one is for the programmer which is next to it and one from the boiler! is this common?!!

what boiler is it ?
is their another cable that gos from boiler straight to the wiring centre box ?

yep a wire goes into the terminal box which is upstairs directly above it. and i have a y plan system, so obv the boiler wires link up with the others. i have a potterton, quite old now, i;d say 15-20 years old.

so you'll have the fused spur for perm live to boiler & wiring centre. and cable for switched live.

i've got the diagram for y-plan wiring but was just not sure why the programmer and boiler had 2 wires each when the pump/3port valve and stats only had 1!!! a bit confusing ...

you can have one cable from programmer if you use a five core cable if not you have to use two 3 core cables.

oh i see. so some of the cables from the programmer don't need to go to the terminal box and just go to the fused spur directly instead? same with the boiler???

your getting me confused now

sorry!!! what i mean is in the y plan diagram all the wires connect together in the terminal box as shown. BUT if the boiler and programmer have 2 cable each then one of them doesn't need to go to the terminal box and just straight into the fused spur instead?!!!

If you have trouble understanding this basic stuff you shouldn't really be doing this work, get someone in who can.

Or enrol on a Honeywell wiring course, its only about £50 and lasts a day. Sandwiches provided.

really, 50quid is ok, might be worth going on.

basically i understand how it works, just not my system!!!lol

Anyway, I know the Y PLAN WIRING diagram shows 25 wires going into the terminal box and joining up as shown.

MY box has 22 wires going into it and the programmer which is downstairs and next to the fuse box had one lead with 3 wires, brown blue and green/yellow linking directly into this. SO I presume instead of a 5 core wire or 2 serparate wires going upstairs, these 3 have joined up in the terminal box directly. IS this correct??
