Hi all,

refitting my three bed house and need to get quotes to complete full wiring job first fix and second fix, Is there anyone in the area that can help with this please?

Not sure if I'm allowed to ask on here this sort of question so apologies if I'm not could not see anything in the rules regarding it.

As ever, personal recommendations are always the best way to find a reputable tradesman, but if you're having to go ahead without much in the way of those, or references, don't put any store by registration itself - sadly it is possible to become registered with woefully inadequate qualifications and zero practical experience. You don't have to spend long here to see people cropping up who are registered and "qualified", but who are clearly seriously incompetent in reality and who should not be charging for their services.

You are looking for someone to rewire a house, and it may surprise and dismay you to learn that it is quite possible to become a "certified electrician" without ever having done that before, and without having acquired any of the practical skills needed to do it without half-destroying your house in the process.

It's your money, £'000s of it, and you have every right to ask prospective tradesmen what their qualifications and experience are. Just being listed here is not a good enough guide. No genuinely experienced electrician, with the "full set" of C&G qualifications will mind you asking - in fact he will wish that everyone was like you.

I feel sorry for people who have been misled by training organisations and (shamefully) the Competent Person scheme organisers into thinking that a 5-day training course, a couple of trivial examples of their work and some basic understanding of how to use test equipment will make them an electrician, but not sorry enough to agree with them trying to sell their services to Joe Public.

The company i used to work for for ten years till i moved up north are based in guildford and i would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone, they are not a huge company and it is run by two partners who are very conscientious. NICEIC registered also.

Thanks for the comments, I did go on a recommendation and am in the process of having to replace a number of floor joists as the guy did not follow building regs resulting in me being out of pocket.

I'll try and locate some more recommendations.

Can anyone help with the following question, I am creating a service channel on the inside of my kitchen wall, to keep the gas and water and heating pipes basically a boxed in section with a long cover where the main services are being located for ease of maintence. As I'm just installing new joists in a number of areas I'd like to put the new wiring also running along this service channel as it will be closed off from fingers by a long MDF cover. Do I need to put separate plastic conduit inside this to house the main wiring runs or can I just add hooks to secure the wires and then the outer cover will satify the regs (note inside the 12 foot by 1 foot channel will be all the pipes and the wires) this will be hidden out of site above the kitchen cabinets, does this sound ok.

Thanks

thanks for that very useful, I just want to have decided how to get the job done before I bring the next electrician in.

When you mention insulating the pipes, will any insulation do? I was planning on using the felt insulation that slips over the pipes or do I have to use that wacking new big insulation in which case my service channel gets a lot bigger.

Can I get round that by having a separator in the service channel so the cables run at the top or the bottom and are kept separate from the pipes by say a 10mm timber noggin running the length and then I can keep to the felt insulation of the pipes?

good point about the gas pipe I had not thought about that, I will add a couple of vents into the closing panel so that the gas could be smelt at each end.

Although I'm getting an electrican to do the wiring I am going to dry lay the copper pipes myself and then get the plumber to solder and connect up, that way I can make the runs as I want to preserve the structure of the building, hence the questions

thanks

You're service channel will be ok as long as;
It is not sealed, gas pipes can only be run in ventilated enclosures, the idea being you smell any gas leak and take action before it becomes dangerous.

Surely it's to prevent a build up of gas in the event of a leak?
