I look at the colours of wires connected to termials marked N and L, with this in mind I would want to test. There is nothing to say red is line or black is neutral, so all may be OK, but I would want to test.

Is the old one a double switch? Is it a dimmer? Is it a 2-way switch? Are you in UK? Show us pics of front and back.

Light switches mostly often have L and SL and do not need N

Colours are probably meaningless.

Have you got the instructions for the new one?

Indeed, and wired up incorrectly too - if polarity is to be believed.
I wouldn't say 'Incorrectly' exactly :) - it looks to me as if a live and switched live pair are using the L poles and another L and SL are using the N poles.
that's why I suspect two lights/lighting circuits are being controlled by the same switch, or possibly it's an interesting way of separating an extractor fan from the lighting circuit?

Some clarification from the OP could be helpful!

AHH I think you hit the nail on the head.
It also operates a extractor.
It's only a single switch to a bathroom
I'm going to test the cables to help explain what's live etc so hopefully you can help. I was just expecting two wires but then found this which confused me.

What sort of tester did you use?

There is no "positive" on AC mains.
