I've been quoted £2000 to take off my old boiler, and connect a new combi boiler. thats including boiler - but still, that seems extreme.

Any thoughts on this? it literally is taking off one boiler and putting on another - siting it at the same location.

Well........
upgrade the gas supply?, powerflush existing system?, upgrade electrics?, supply boiler. It's often not quite as simple as you suggest but why not get more quotes and compare them?

THE QUOTE COULD BE A VERY GOOD PRICE ,DEPENDING ON MAKE/MODEL OF BOILER, COMBIS VARY FROM £500 TO£1500 JUST FOR THE BOILER.

CORGI=£££££££.........POLSKI= cheapaschips   Between them they have ****ed the industry

Also depend on wether guy quoting job is one of the lucky engineers who gets his van and fuel supplied free by the local dealership, an exstensive tool kit supplied free by manufacturers so he can test there products. Lucky enough to be told he is insurance companys millionth customer that day an can have his public liabilty an van insurance for free. And have a really understanding ACS centre who let him have the spare place for his exams an feel that sorry for him they actually pay him for taking it thus saving him thousands of pounds in lost wages and fees.. IF it is one of those lucky engineers you are being ripped off big time. Why do people think it is just the cost of the materials etc we are paying for an everything else profit

And when you see a private doctor, ask him why he's charging so much to "literally write a few words on a piece of paper".

There's nothing special about fitting boilers, it's competitive the same as anything else. If it were a cake-walk there would be more people doing it, simple as that. If you ask a tax man or accountant (just two of the things we have to do deal with while earning nothing) about plumbers' incomes, you'd find they're pretty average.

Get 3 quotes - start with British Gas.

If you are genuinely unsure and interested, just ask him to explain what he will do (obviously there are ways of asking which will insult anybody and you won't get any information, and ways which will help build an understanding between customer and engineer).

Although the boiler is going in the same kind of location and doing a boilers job, its going to have all its pipes (water, gas, flue for exhaust gases) and wires (power, controls) in different places. Its probably cheaper than if the engineer had to bring all those services to a 'new' place for your boiler, but still lots of work and in some ways more difficult because there will things already in the way - i.e. he'll have to work around what is there, moving things, filling in old holes etc. Oh and I guess he'll be taking your old boiler away as well - he's probably paying for waste disposal.
