Childcare costs.

So the government have announced a great new plan top get mums back to work part-time. If they work less than 16 hours per week they can claim up to £300 per week in childcare. Great idea eh?

Let's take a mum with 2 kids who works 10 hours a week.

She is on minimum wage and thus earns about sixty quid a week.

Great! She's earning a bit of dosh.

The only drawback is - the taxpayer pays 300 quid to look after her brats for her.

She pays no tax on here earnings.

The taxpayer pays £300.

Excuse me for being thick but how does this help the economy?

Why not pay her £60 to stay at home to look after her own brats? Saving the taxpayer £240 per week?

Better still, let her husband go out and earn the wage and she stay at home to raise well behaved and normal children.

Just like they did when I was a kid.

No wonder we are bust is it?

Joe surely that is not right.....I can't imagine it applies to mothers working less than 16 hours per week.
I am sure a mother will not receive £300 in childcare benefits just to go and earn £60 a week....that would be ludicrous.

Most mothers have to rely on grandparents like myself to look after their children as they cannot afford childcare.
If house prices were not so ridiculously high mothers would be able to afford to stay at home and look after their own 'children' (why brats ?????), which most mothers would much prefer to do.
Unfortunately these days one wage is just not enough to keep a roof over their heads.

Parents on low incomes who are working less than 16 hours a week will be eligible for childcare support from 2013, under new government plans.

Some £300m has been allocated for the move, worth up to £175 a week for one child and £300 for two or more.

Well that is ridiculous ...... so my daughter in law would be better off staying at home ..... what an absolute joke (except its not funny).

She can claim and you can be the child carer (whether you do or not).

Actually I think that is true....but I would have to be registered as an 'official' child-minder.

But that is not the point really is it......what sounds ridiculous is that it applies to someone working under 16 hours per week, so earning less than the child care paid

If that is the case the best thing would be for her to give up her job and become a child minder herself and earn £300 for looking after two children for less than 16 hours.

On second thoughts that does sound good..... where do I apply

Simply because the Housewife of the 60`s wanted to work - and fair play to them - but the market soon rose to take in the 2 wage household . Now that`s Not reversible . it`s against the natural laws of humanity ;) Kind of justifies Socialism tho`

the maximum tax free allowance for childcare is £243 per month, meaning if a parent uses a registered childminder the first £243 childcare costs come off before tax, in effect saving them 20%, nobody gets £300 per week for childcare when the work 10hrs per week, even through the DSS there are a couple of assistance schemes where parents get assistance with their child care, for the first 6 weeks of taking a new job, where they can receive up to 40% of their child care costs, not a set amount, so dont know where you got this info from, i got mine from my wife who is a registerd childminder and knows how the scheme works as she deals with both privately funded and DSS assisted parents

joe stop talking mince, parents cannot claim any childcare assistance unless the use a registered childminder via their reg number, and yes my wife could sign 10 forms saying she is minding 10 kids when she wasnt but the actual fees would then be linked to her income and she would have to pay tax on the phoney earnings

I can't agree Nige F that this happened in the sixties.....ten years ago you could buy a small house here for £45,000. now they are £145,000 for the tiniest property, how are families meant to cope with an extra £100.000 mortgage.
