Hi..

After some advice before we start opening up our chimney breast please..

Up until 5 years ago we had a gas fire fitted... it was an eyesore so had it removed and had the gap plasterboarded until we decided what to do.. As I type my wife and I are discussing reusing the fire place for the purpose it was built and have an open fire put in...

Before we go ahead and start..(council already sorted) does anyone on here have an idea how much it would be to have a chimney pot installed..? and also before we start going beyond the point of no return I want to make sure that the chimney is pulling smoke up efficiently and was going to use a smoke pellet to test... Will the smoke draw up without the chimney pot? I havent had the chimney capped since having the gas fire out so I'm assuming the vent is still on..(its dark... cant see at the min).. any guidance anyone has would be brilliant.. thanks

Research on this site, there has recently been a tremendous amount of posting and references regarding your issues.

What do you mean by "council already sorted"?

The pot aids the draw up the flue, so it's not normally worth testing - perhaps only to see if there is a token draw - ie that the flue is still open

This set up is not something you can do DIY - the opening, back, flue and pot need to be looked at by a competent person
