Interesting. I wonder how much of those big numbers are made up from vast production of relatively low tech stuff. HK would benefit on that metric.
OTOH France for example is technically advanced though they don't make so much.
It depends how you measure things.

I've got to know a guy from HK who came out recently when the UK offered visas.
He works in telecomms G5 hard/software. One of the reasons he got out is what he saw of China's determination and progress in access to, and control of, every aspect of everyone's life. He says "never trust them with anything".

Wafers per month / wafer size. Process technology is a guide of sorts to sophistication, small better but some stuff wont use very fine line sizes.
