A builder came round the other day, experienced, has about 10 employed staff, he said to paint the whole lot with PVA.

Phoned Unibond Technical bod and he said PVA would all wash off when it rains! Even their exterior PVA only becomes waterproof when it's mixed with cement. I said to the guy wouldn't it penetrate in and he said - yes, then the rain would penetrate it straight back out! I think if Unibond are saying no then that's pretty much definitive.
Have since noticed it on quite a few other houses round here east Surrey. Must have been the hard winter I reckon.
