The fuel solenoid is usually there to stop the engine, by cutting off the fuel to the engine when you turn off the ignition switch and remove the key.
How do you stop your engine, by stalling it?

I think the solonoid your are looking at is the cold start advance, the fuel solonoid is under an armoured cover on top of the pump if its a mechanical one.

On the XUD9 engine the shut off solenoid is on the top of the pump and has one wire...if its a DW8 motor the shut off is deep inside the pump so I think Peter is correct. For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would disconnect the advancer though.
John :)
