I am currently refurbishing my downstairs cloakroom. I intend to fit a new toilet pan over either ceramic or slate tiles.

I have removed the old parquet flooring and there is a black tar like residue left on the concrete floor. I have spent many hours scraping this away and using white spirit to get some high spots down.

Is there an easier way of removing his?

Also do I need to seal the concrete floor before laying down the tiles.

I intended to buy the correct powder mix floor adhesive from my local tile specialist.

Thanks for your help :)

why are you removing it - it sounds as if the "black tar like residue" may be your dpm!

I assumed that the tar based residue would be oil based, so that when I mixed up the floor tile adhesive it wouldn't actually stick to the floor.

I thought the new adhesive to be applied would actually bond better with concrete below it...is this reasoning wide of the mark?

AAaaggghhh!!! Another 2 1/2 hours mind numbing hours spent scraping this stuff off....is there no other way???

Any advice gratefully received.

One suggestion I have had to overcome the bitumen problem was to prime the floor, then apply a layer of porcelain adhesive on top...allow to set and then once set apply the tiles on top using a flexible adhesive.
this will eaise my floor level slightly...are then any experts out there who may have an opinion on this method? Many thanks...

I believe the stuff you want is liquid polymer which is mixed with the flooring adhesive to stick to bitumen, the floor tiles shop should tell you more.
