Maybe I'm being a bit thick, but what's the difference between this:

I'm looking for a reliable waste for a basin where you push the mechanism once to close and again to open.

Nothing really just the design 1 sits flush 1 sits over the top.
But both the same idea.

Both work well.

I've fitted both and both as good as each other, just personal choice really what you think looks better for you.
I probably prefer your first choice.

I think I prefer the second, but only because it looks like it might empty quicker. Or is that bunkum?

The difference is cosmetic only.

Both are the same diameter waste, and both have the same amount of valve lift (3.5mm)

I have a push to close and push to open.

Sometimes it jams closed and has to be pushed up from underneath.
