A very good question. Russia is life-extending several nuclear power stations and planning to commission many more... They're the ones with the oil and gas, if they aren't planning to rely on it then it would be foolhardy to assume they'll keep on exporting it!

We need at least SOME degree of energy autonomy, to ensure that we can keep vital services running if the imports stop. Though we may have to put on a thick jumper and leave the car at home!

Open-cast mining is the cheapest and most economically viable method to mine coal in the UK at the moment, although it is a real eyesore. When an underground mine is abandoned it usually closes up by itself, so it's not a matter of reopening mines rather than to sink new shafts. It won't even create a great deal of jobs, now that a few men with some 200-tonne trucks and a dragline can shift thousands of tonnes an hour.

Only thing that bothers me is that I'm yet to find any estimates of the UKs coal reserves that agree with each other, and few of these estimates would give us more than a couple of decades at current energy use levels.

Coal is a stop-gap at best.

Russian gas is a commodity, what country would be stupid enough to stop selling it for profit?
They might try to up the price by stopping production from time to time but eventualy demand for it would start the flow again.

Unless you are thinking that the soviet union is about to reform and seek global domination?

Perhaps they aren't so sure that their reserves are as bountiful as once thought, so they are conserving their limited resources?

Even when North Sea oil and gas were at their peaks and capable of supplying all our energy needs, we were still importing. It makes sense to try and conserve a limited resource for as long as you can just buy someone else's at a reasonable price.

Of course, you could be right and they might just be using OPEC tactics. Drive up demand, hence price, hence the total reserve value increases.

Roll on Iceland's geothermal hydrogen economy... As a side benefit, no more oil slicks: when one of those tankers crashes and pees liquid hydrogen all over the shop you just create the world's largest artificial iceberg :D

all the mines have been closed

you cant reopen a deep mine once its flooded and they are

something else to thank thatcher for

These amongst others.
Link doesn't seem to be working but Britain has pledged £60million to the Congo.

Nice work for all the Corgis, converting every single gas appliance to run on coal gas! :D :D
