Why are there coarse-threaded screws and fine threaded screws available?

What applications are they suited to and why?

No bolt stuff please, only talking about screws.

Thanks!

I did see the figures once, the traditional screws with bigger gap's between thread's have better holding capabilities ,IT very rarely comes into play in the day of a woodworker, apart from odd situations, sometimes screwing into fast grown/ carcasing timber particularly in end grain,a carcass screw will help a problem.

The only area I can think of is for plasterboarding - fine threads are used on metal lath systems, coarse on timber stud. Other thna that as HWW says above

A wider thread is useful where the material breaks or crumbles easily, which could lead to the screw being easy to pull out. Less thread to disturb the material. Plaster, chipboard, some fibreboards etc.

Another advantage is that the screw will go in faster

A potential disadvantage is less tensile strength as the shank is thinner and the thread deeper
