The frustrating bit is that you have to get your opt out “legally certified”. So that’s two lawyers signing off and charging probably £1k each minimum

Correct you must get the opt out certificated by a lawyer.

You are free to divorce, buy a house, get married, buy a car, sign an employment contract, get a loan, write a Will, donate an organ all without using lawyer, but this law says you must have a lawyer if you want to opt out.

Because how is a couple in a long term relationship with kids and a mortgage different to a married couple. Especially as now no reason at all is required legally to divorce. People in civil ceremonies choose their vows and often don’t make a commitment got life. So why have marriage unless you’re religious.

People who cohabit and jointly pay mortgages, have kids etc are already protected. If you move in to your partners house and contribute to improving the asset, you will likely have a claim.

This law allows someone to move with a financially better off partner, quit their job, go off with their personal trainer and then claim a slice of the ex's assets when the relationship ends.

From what you’re saying the old law didn’t give the same rights as a divorce. The answer is pre nups
