Actually they went along with it following years of propaganda that suited his purposes and he then managed to get complete control - with their backing - just enough of them any way.

The propaganda was well received partly down to the end result of WW1 but given time people can be persuaded to believe almost anything especially if some group can be blamed for problems that in real terms have nothing what so ever to do with them what ever they are. Mixing in several apparent problems helps even more. Just like all similar things in the political area the jam tomorrow often never arrives.
