im in the process of building a 9m x 6m wooded (44mm) log garage. As the garage is close to a now felled tree I have been told that it will need 2m deep trenches to support the base. This seems unbelievably excessive as the whole garage weighs only 2.5 tons with the base potentially weighing 50 tons and the garage height is around 3m height compared to the footings 2m. The garage is not even attached to the main building.

Is this right, or are there alternatives?[/u]

2m? How tall was the tree? I would say it's only a garage and crack on. Who told you you needed a 2m deep pit of concrete? 108 cubic metres of concrete isn't cheap either.
