Hi,
I'm very confused as to what is happening with my hot water. For months now I've had this banging noise in the pipes, or what sounds like the pipes but nobody has been able to locate where it's coming from. It happens when my immersion heater, my boiler and washing machine are all switched off, or when they are on - it makes no difference - so we just can't figure it out. In the last couple of weeks (since the boiler got serviced) I have also noticed that we seem on certain days to have boiling hot water, even though the boiler is switched off and the immersion heater is switched off and they have both been off for a day. I do have my washing machine on but I didn't think would affect the tap water? Also there is a pipe which runs from upstairs where the immersion heater is, down into my kitchen which always seems to be hot. I suspect (!!) this is where the hot water is coming from. Do you think my immersion heater might be broken? Why is the water hot when it is actually switched off? I am so confused and the plumber I had around said he couldn't work it out either! Any help would be very, very much appreciated!!!

I dont expect you to have the skill to work out whats wrong.

But I DO expect that any competent plumber would be able to work out the cause of such a simple fault.

It could be something as simple as the immersion switch being up side down!

Some plumbers are very incompetent.

Simple really, turn the boiler off at the spur, or pull the plug out of the socket, rather than selecting "off" at the timer.

thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I've tried that already... anyway today the water is luke warm. I just can't understand the logic. Tomorrow will probably be hot again...

Tomorrow you will have the answer; if the boiler has been continuously turned off at the spur for 48 hours, and the water has warmed up, the immersion heater has been on. If so, remove the fuse at the spur for the immersion heater.

As we don't know what boiler/system you have - other than a boiler and cylinder - a possible fault could, if gravity hot water, the gas valve isn't shutting off properly, when the power is cut, and thus always heating the cylinder, could also cause the banging (boiling the water in the system).

Hi I have an Ideal Classic FF340 boiler which heats my water and also the radiators and an huge old immersion heater in the bathroom which only does the water (or at least only seems to work for the water!). Does that help at all? Do you mean the gas valve on the boiler (sorry, I am a bit clueless). Thanks :)

With everything off have a look through the veiwing window of boiler if it has one to see if flame still there or feel case to see if its warm

does your heating programmer allow different programs for each day of the week?

I encountered one that did. The programmed times needed changing individually for each day of the week, with no obvious way of advancing through the menu system to days of the week, so any changes I made only affected Mondays.

When I eventually found a handbook for it, showing the right key sequence, all became clear.

On our old worcester boiler, the programmer requires that you hold down one key while pressing day and copy over and over until all days have been copied the same. Then you can go through the days and alter them if required. ;)
