Consumer unit keeps tripping ourlt

In my case, it was the macerator.

Funnily enough, the whole house tripped a couple of days ago when Mrs Mottie put a slice of bread in the toaster. It’s only about 6 months old. I turned it upside down, gave it a shake in case anything was stuck inside, reset the breaker and everything was okay. I switched it on and off about 20 times and it’s not caused any problems so hoping it was just a one-off.
Probably a sultana from your hot cross bun!

All it needs is a crumb of bread, carbonised, shorting the bar element to the metal case.

I'd expect a little more clearance between live parts and earthed parts than the width of a crumb of bread!
Talk of toaster elements reminded me of the time I was round my mates and we heard his 14 year old daughter scream from the kitchen. We ran in there and she said a man had grabbed her by the shoulders and then ran out of the back door. We charged out, I went one way, he went the other but we both drew a blank. When we went back in, he asked her exactly what happened and she said she was making some toast, the bread got stuck, she tried to free it with a knife and that’s when she was grabbed from behind. Of course, she’d had an electric shock and one look at the knife confirmed it!
