consumer unit trouble

He's not much of an electrician if he doesn't know how but there are many out there who make the same mistake

looks like those pesky fuse fairies have been in too.

domster,

switch off the RCD underneath the CU and remove the two screws on the front of the CU

Remove the cover and take a couple of good quality close up shots.

Replace cover and switch on power.

If you don't feel confident enough then don't do it.

Thats great.

Although cant really comment as it looks like the electrician has bodged it to get it all working.

If he put that link between the two top left bars when he installed it would cause the problems you describe.

Did all the switches on the right of the RCD (one with the test buton on) do something when he initially wired it? Because if so, you are a neutral short on the RCD neutral bar meaning that there is a neutral in the NON-RCD bar

Is the electrician you are using a member of a self certify scheme such as NICEIC, Napit, Elecsa? If not has a building notice been submitted to your council?

The reason I ask is that any spark worth their salt should have been able to sort this fairly quickly.

Hope im not being too arrogant

Prize goes to RF Lighting then - neutral to the RCD should be fed into the top not the bottom of the module as he has done.

Can't say really whether it is safe as he seems to have doubled up some circuits, but I think he has led you down the garden path so to speak.

You will be very hard pushed to find a spark to certify someone else's work.

Also, it looks like you have a TT install (Earth rod outsode) as I cant see an earth connecting anywhere to your incoming supply.

If it is a TT supply then he has used the wrong type of consumer unit for a start. TT supplies must be protected by a time delayed RCD in place of the big red main switch.

I would get a qualified spark in to check those circuits and put it right.
Check that they are a member of a self certifying scheme.

Oh yeah
just noticed that

I Still think its a TT supply though

to be frank, you need someone more competent to sort it.

The person who fitted it did not do a good job. It is not difficult to do one of these properly if you understand what you are doing.

the bad news is that a suitably qualified person will have to carry out tests and possibly remedial work, and will have to charge you for his time. I fear this will end up costing you more than if you'd had it done properly in the first place.

Sorry.
