My wife had her contactless card cloned in Liverpool, the only place it was used was at the 5guys restaurant and it was in our sight all the time.
Bank paid up though.
You can drill a hole in them to disable the chip.
Or use one yet keep it in a protected sleeve to prevent misuse - you get the benefit of them without the theft then.

I don't think "would you mind awfully drilling a hole in the cards you stole from me" is going to work on card thieves.
