Looking for help and advice about disconnecting an old gas cooker and connecting a new one, which is being delivered on friday. installation costs are expensive and we were hoping we could do this ourselves. Can it be done or do we have to involve the professionals?
I would strongly suggest you get a Gas safe engineer to do it.
Gas can be very dangerous if not connected correctly and no money is to much, to secure you, your family and the safety of your property.
Additionally when the cooker is installed it needs to be checked that its operating correctly by this I dont mean that it works, but that the safety devices function correctly.
Also it needs to be checked that there are no internal leaks on the new appliance, I have had brand new ones out of the box that have leaked, only a registered gas installer can check this.
Go on the gas safe website find an engineer section and type in your postcode, when the local engineers come up look at the bit that says view our engineers.........a right royal rogues gallery !

Any householder can remove the bayonet fitting from the old cooker.
But the new ones come without the gas hose connected. That should be fitted by a gas registered engineer who will then test and commission the new appliance.
Now I dont know what you consider expensive but we charge about £65 in our local area which includes supplying the hose. That seems very reasonable to me but its too expensive for some people who expect to get it done for £30. It would surprise me if any gas registered person is going to supply a hose and fit one for so little.

Have you had a quote to fit?
What is your perception of "expensive"?
Technically, and arguably, as a housholder, you are allowed to fit it if you are competant. Frankly, with respect, you are unlikely to be so.
When selecting the cooker, did you consider clearances, including wall mounted cupboards?
There is one cooker seller who quotes about £85 to fit the hose and install the cooker soon after its delivered.
As far as I know they must have an RGI who follows the deliveries an hour or two later. I expect they provide that service just to be able to for those customers who want a single point of supply and the odd £10 or £20 extra is not important.
Didn't realise buying a new cooker was going to be so difficult! Should have included installation when ordering cooker in first place. We do have a friend who is corgi registered but NOT gas safe registered who doesn't want to help.
Been checking out websites and found arguments on both sides, do it properly and do it youself! I want it done right, but out of work and on benefits at moment and paying for a new cooker was hard enough, that was all. Found a local guy off gas safe website, awaiting respsonse to email request for quote. Thanks for all the replies, will let you know how it goes.
Have you been asked by the suppliers / potential installers of the cooker if you live in a house or a flat? It's actually very important as to what safety devices are incorporated into the appliance.
Not been asked that by anyone. Ordered cooker from argos website. We live in a flat, 2nd floor up. Cooker we have at mo is very old, isn't secured by a chain. Its an old London Cooker.
