Coping with pain

In my experience, acupuncture only works when you've almost recovered from a spell of pain and have the residual discomfort lingering about.
Which is really hard to tell if it's just the natural healing process and the effect of having a half hour of calm relaxation time.

Not aimed at you but acupuncture has no good evidence it works better than a massage. So you might as well get a massage.

Change your mattress to a firm one..and lie flat on your bac with only one pillow. It takes a week or more to get used to it, if you want to try before you buy, plenty of the inflatable foam camping mats available cheap at end of summer ( not a blow up mattress). Do the leg raise exercises as instructed by physio, before and after sleep.

I was hit by a boat of all things on l 4/5 3 bulged disc, it took 4 months to get the pain down from a 10 to 3 with adherence to the bed exercises , and then Tia Chi at a back club for a further 4 months, if there is not one near you, they are pretty good at the Oh comon bit then youtube is your friend.. It does work but its a long long long process.

You can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together but its really a case of getting the muscles to take over some of the load from the discs.

Nerve pain is one of the most difficult pains to both deal with and treat - there is no telling when or where the pain will strike, and it can totally stop you functioning.

Have you asked your GP if you can try Amitryptilin?
I agree nerve (/neuropathy) pain is very strong. When it's stabbing hard I'm on max gabapentin about 4g/day (same as pregabalin really, though P is easier to take) and being quiet somewhere. Trammies and a scotch put me out.
I "got used to living with it" as it came on in my 20's- hereditary they say. I can be hard not to call out, when it's the shooting sort of pain, and there's nothing I can do to stop one eye running. Makes social interactions inconvenient..
I tried weed - makes me feel sick.

I tried amtriptylin years ago, I think it's a weakish effect and would interfere with other things for me.

I know my pain threshold has moved up. I don't feel injections & things, and carry the hot pots.

No, if you tried it you would know.
The effect is clear from the following day and no natural healing process is so quick.
After a few sessions you're ok for a long period (weeks or even months).
It's not a cure, but helps with residual pain when the joint mechanism is working again but there's still inflammation and pain memory.
Massage is also very good, but unfortunately finding a physiotherapist willing to touch you nowadays is almost impossible, especially in the NHS.

If it worked that well it would be easy to demonstrate.

When tested it works no better than sham acupuncture (random spots instead of 'real' acupuncture, false needles etc.) Or other placebo treatments.

I'm glad you found it helped you, but it looks like it's just a placebo.

Chinese traditional medicine has been around for over 3000 years.
To become an acupuncturist in China you need to study 6 years and train another 6 years with no guarantee of passing your training.
There must be something real behind it.
I know that over here you can get an acupuncture certificate with a weekend course, that's why you need to try the real thing before judging.

Have you asked your GP if you can try Amitryptilin? One of the older anti-depressants, not used often for depression but now widely used at low doses for nerve pain with quite a lot of success; it does not work for everybody, but it did for me - I only needed it for a few months long enough to be able to function again, but many people stay on it for years without problems. It can take up to 6 weeks to start working, but I noticed some benefits after 10 days. Also had a stronger (30mg) co-codomol to assist sleeping. Now using Co-Codomol of a night and trying various distraction therapies during the day.
Hope something works, as I now know exactly how disabling nerve pain can be - nothing visible to show people what hurts, just burning, stabbing pain everywhere.
Thank you....

I did try Amitriptyline many years ago. It just made me extremely weak and exhausted...

Doc prescribed me Pregabalin this morning...so, 2 a day for a month then see the vet to discuss the 30 days!!!

I just got to persevere with them. Through any side effects that may pop up. I got to really try...

Like you say, you cant see nerve pain. You can look healthy but be in torment inside!!! It can be debilitating. Just like anxiety and depression can be..

Cheers....

I have got a solid orthopedic mattress. It is really good.

I will try to continue my walks and some bed exercises that i have been doing for the last 6 months....but, the last 2 weeks have not been good at all....plus my constant burning pain issue...

No, there doesn't need to be anything real behind it.

It's a fad that had been dug up dozens of times through history, found wanting and then abandoned.

If it worked it would be possible to demonstrate it, and you can, until you factor in the placebo effect. Then it disappears.

But let's not ruin the thread, I'm going to drop this here.

I will go back to my doc and ask about stronger painkillers. Daughters friends dad uses liquid morphine but only on really bad days as i know that can be addictive...
maybe a weekly slow release morphine patch ? My mrs has one

What about hedgehogs?

Look at them. Its obvious they love acupuncture!!!

Have you got Tramadol? It's a synthetic opioid. SOmewhat addictive.
My doc wasn't keen to give it , so I asked if there was something I could use which had a longer effect, to try to get a nights sleep.
They were prescribed on that basis., and I built a stock on the repeat scrip.

Good for renal colic, gall stones, bone stuff - deep things. Seems less good relatively, for toothache! Cocodamol is better for that. SOME use for nerve stuff, but doesn't touch the sides when that's bad.

You can't mix it with codeine unless you want a high
but you can freely with paracetamol, or ibuprofen, or aspirin. Don't mix aspirin + Ibuprofen.
T makes you dizzy at first.
Mixing the pkillers seems to be extra effective.
