What's the correct height and how does it work on the stairs – ie. do you stop the horizontal line at a vertical point at where the first step starts or should the height of the rail going up/down the stairs be the same as on level floors (albeit perpendicular to the angle of the stairs, if that makes sense!?)

I was told that they were invented to aid resting/carry coffins down so that would surely mean the same height as the hand rail? It's a Victorian house.

Thanks

Dado protects walls from chair-back knocks.

Going up stairs usually requires a vertical bit either at the top or bottom or both.

Good question,if the doors have a lock rail and the paneling is only below the dado, the top of the dado capping lines up with the top of the lock rail.if there is paneling above the the dado, the rail would centre on the lock rail thus leaving leaving room above the dado capping for the bottom rail on the paneling to line up with the top of the lock rail, all panels and moulding reading through,if no lock rail exist on door dado rail height can decided by function of room, failing that 36" is a good rule of thumb
