creaking stairs

We have some creaking stairs. I can get to the underside and can see gaps between treads and the wedge blocks despite the blocks being firmly attached. I believe I'm supposed to take the blocks out, clean them up and re-glue.

Could I use any sort of flexible filler instead?

(I know this is not the sort of thing true carpenters would do .. but I'm not a carpenter...)
