I went to change the bulb from a downlighter in the bathroom and instead of unscrewing the cover, the whole unit rotated. This was followed shortly by a load of the plasterboard crumbing out of the hole. The unit is now hanging from the wires in a hole too big with a ragged and loose edge.

Any suggestions?
(shouting at the wife didn't achieve anything)

If it is a single downlighter you could maybe replace with a larger one to cover up the damage or maybe you will have to replace the entire ceiling,if you are worried about the unit hanging from the wires go into the electrical section and they will advise how to make safe.

I am not a professional but when this happened to me I repaired it as follows.

Cut a square of plasterboard say 6 inches square, put hole in it to take fitting. Cut 6 inches square out of ceiling. Over the top of ceiling put piece of wood either side of square use some no nails or plaster adhesive, hold down with small screws, attach your cut out plaster to wood with adhesive and screws again. When stuck solid fill in to level of existing ceiling, I overfill slightly and sand back. Repaint, perfect.

Adjust the size of plasterboard to what you need to fill. As long as the spring toggles on the light fitting can lay flat, that's all you need.

As I said I'm no expert but it is impossible to see, even by my hawke-eyed wife!!
