Just putting some chrome stop ends on PEX pipe and noticed that despite having the correct fitting inside the pipe, it still needs an olive on the pipe to grip it.. I thought you weren't ever supposed to use olives on plastic pipe? Confused

If you use a compression fitting on plastic.

Use a pipe insert
Use a copper olive (softer than brass)
Do not use any jointing compound (PTFE tape ok if required)
Do not over tighten
Read the installation manual

Certain manufacturers dictate that you need to use an insert PLUS a copper (not brass) olive when joining a compression fitting to plastic pipe.

AFAIK,the olive crushes around the plastic pipe (and insert) in the same manner as it does with copper pipe.

I assume it depends on the manufacturer but, IMHO, I suspect not using an olive on plastic pipe would cause it to leak.
