Draw a line at the height you want the dado on the wall
Draw a line at the height you want the dado on the Stairs.

Where they intersect is the angle.

If you have a protractor (angle measuring thing often found in a kids stationery set), use this to find the angle of intersection, then half it to find the engle at which you need to cut the mitres.

When I did our stairs, I had an external corner, top and bottom of the slope, so I had to cut a small "fillet" to fill the gap and make the mitres fit and meet properly.
