--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't get my new light fitting to work. I will do let you know step by step what I have...........

Old light:
3 places for wire input. 3 red in one. 2 black in one. 1 black in one.

New light:
2 places for wire input. Live and neutral only

I tried putting all red wires together and all black wires together, but the fuse blew. I know that some of the black wires are to do with the upstairs lighting cicuit.

Any idea what goes where?

yes

your problem is to find which wire goes to the switch (there is no easy way), to do this the best way is to use a multi meter

Let me get this right...........

3 red ones go together. Not connected to anything in new light

2 black cables go to Neutral

1 black cable (happens to have red tape on it) goes to live

Correct?

On a matter related to this, is it me or has there been a recent proliferation of light fittings that only have two connectors? I've fitted a fair few light fittings in my time, but in the past few months I've come across two that only had two conectors (in to which you could only fit one wire). Are people getting in cheap imports from the contentent or something?

Oh and they don' t seem fit over the gubbins from the existing ceiling rose - well not without too much of a fight.

only metal lights require an earth, hence 3 terminals. two terminals would imply ftting ie either made from a non conductive material, or double insulated

It's a b*tch isn't it? How simple would it be to design luminaire bases to fit over ceiling roses? And how much safer? On the other hand, I make a lot of pocket money from sorting out all those DIY-blown fuses...

A rare few are designed just to plug in to a standard bc lampholder such as you would find on the end of a pendant, then fit over the whole lot and fix to the ceiling. But they are few & far between.

IMHO it should be illegal to sell luminaires which do not come equipped with enough terminals to take the place of a loop-in rose.

OOI - given that you knew that the 3 black wires weren't originally connected together, why did you think it would be OK to change that?

the joys of diy

this one is "the killer"
1 black cable (happens to have red tape on it) goes to live

Perhaps the title of this thread should be "Damn my failure to make notes"!!

unless of course it is intentional that the manufacturers don't want you to loop in and out of their fittings but use a pluggable rose.

But take heart, mes braves, how about using the frankly wonderful products from WAGO (Pronounce 'Vargo'] I've just taken delivery of my free samples and I have to say I'm well impressed.
