Hi

My boiler locked out and I didn't notice this for a few hours. I called the heating engineer who replaced the pump but it still locked out. He said the pump was running but the fan didn't start up. He replaced the jets and gave it a service but still no joy.

He thought it might be the actual control unit so took that to get a replacement. However he called today to say he has spoken to Worcester who have indicated that something may be seriously wrong with it and he is coming later to take the burner to take to Worcester for them to look at it.

As I've already paid for a new pump, does this now mean I've got to get a brand new boiler and if so, how much would this cost? If I've got to get a new boiler (I hope not), will I be able to get my money back as it were on the pump I've paid for?

Does anyone know what the cause of the lockout could be despite the new pump?

This guy is a numpty don't even let him in the house.
Get someone else.

Oil boilers are easy to fix. Did he even put pressure guages and a flue gas analyser on it?

I don't know but he was here all afternoon yesterday and I still have no heat or hot water (except via the immersion).

He did say (and he showed me) that the control box was very hot and he said it was arching (which I think it did when I first tried to set it). But if he's spoken to Worcester and they are saying it could be serious, then he wouldn't make that up would he?

Fixing a burner is easy. he doesn't need to take it to worcester or talk to worcester about it. Don't let him in the house he is after selling you a new boiler.

He has already fitted a new pump though which has cost me £250 and he was going off to get a new control box which was going to cost £125 plus VAT. He has the control box. If the pump wasn't the problem and he still hasn't fixed it, can I get my £250 back?

A pump costs about £45 and control boxes about £30.
Don't let him anywhere near the house.

Thank you. I guess he has charged 4 hours of labour as well which is why it's cost £250 although he does seem to have overcharged me - especially as I didn't need the pump, although the seals did need redoing as oil was dripping.

I'm getting a second opinion tomorrow and I will ask him for the control box back before he goes and gets that as well!
