Have you pulled the knob to show the level in the sit tube? This also bleeds the filter.

Boiler is thankfully now working. A lot of air came out and the initial oil was a crappy colour. Even if I'd managed to bleed the pump it wouldn't have worked without intervention and the pressure had been set far to high by the guy that used to service the boiler. Thanks for all the advice I've received here. I appreciate your time.
