You need 3/4 tappings on a rad to run gravity successfully. . Take the foam off the cyl...can you buy them unlagged now... Always used to leave them without jacket on s/f...If it`s a direct cyl you can only run a cast iron rad...pressed steell rot thru in no time. No I`m not joking, been there ,tee shirt etc.

You reduce the rate that the fuel is oxidised. You can reduce the amount of fuel available, change the type of fuel, or reduce the oxygen supply. Have you heard of turning a fire down? Common practice in the world of heat.

Can anyone else tell me how hot water damages a copper cylinder?

The only "rupturing tank when immersion boiled the water" you're likely to find is a PLASTIC one in a loft.

I can't see how it can be overheated either Chris, it may be poor diagnosis of long term corrosion judging by the original and subsequent posts.

You should not really use a pressed steel radiator on a HW circuit.

It used to be a cast iron rad as part of a brass towel rail or a separate c.i. rad. The c.i. being much thicker and less prone to attack by the direct water. In any case not suitable for soft water areas.
