I need to replace my son's front door dead lock (lost key). They seem to be sold in 2 1/2 and 3 inch sizes. Apart from this size difference are they all manufactured to standard sizes in that all key holes are in the same relative position and all door cavity's are the same size regardless of make?

In theory yes they are, but if you take your old lock to the locksmith shop they can change them for a new keys setting. Some good locksmith can work out the shape of your old key if you're lucky ! Obviously you have to work out what the cheapest option are against the price of a new lock.

For your information, the front or back door mortise lock should be a 5-lever with a BS3621 kitemark for household insurance otherwise the insurance will be policy null and void.

Cilla Black has lost a £1,000,000 claim was rejected from her insurer because the property didn't have any window locks !!!

See this.
