Hi, I would like to deck around 40 sqm of ground at the bottom of my garden. It will have a railway sleeper wall at one side and a fence at the other. The land is soil based, which I am planning to level. I understand that I need to fix in lots of posts as support, but what technical dimensions do I need to think about? i.e. how thick/side should the joists be, how many post holes do I need, how much will it roughly cost for material?

I am reasonably OK with manual work and handy enough with garden construction, but need a few pointers to help me along.

Thanks

I'm just in the process of doing one now... ~ 30m² 6m x 4.8m

Joists every 400mm, cross supports every 1200mm, posts every 1200mm

Plenty of guides to doing decking available on the internet ;)

Stuff I've bought as a price guide...

Decking boards 48 x 4.8m 125x38mm @ £1.35m
Joists 30 x 3m, and 10 x 4.8m 150x47mm @ £1.88m
Posts 4 x 3m 75x75mm @ £3.54m
Limestone gravel 20mm - 1 ton @ £36
all + VAT - total bill inc VAT £743.29

all pressure treated timber from 'Chadwicks' - special offer on decking at the mo - apparently :)

So - real prices from a real life project :D

Hope this helps...

My timber has arrived today

BUT - I had been quoted deck boards at 38mm x 125mm - Unfortunately mostly being a B&Q type DIY shopper - I neglected to take into account this being a nominal size! - The actual boards are 30mm x 119mm

This means I am effectively 2 boards short unless I up the gap between them from 4mm to 10mm

Dagnabittt!!!

I'm gonna have to work out what I'm going to do with this one...

have a search through the forum, me and wabbit poo have answered several hundred on these. if you have any specific answers feel free to ask some more. As to the cost of the materials, pick up the phone and try some builders merchants.
