My car has broken.... Symptoms are:-
1) It was making a clunk noise while taking corners.
2) Shuddering through the steering column.
How can you tell if your gearbox is knackered or if its the drive shaft, or something else?

My initial sleuth diagnosis is that one of your driveshaft constant velocity joints has committed a severe crime.
John :)

A trailer borne 306 came here last Friday - with no drive at all due to the CV joint totally worn away.
Hell it must have been clunking for ages, and it just shows what can happen from one years MOT to the next.
There was a suggestion for the MOT to be every 2 years, I recall.

The 4 - 2 - 2 mot system is still being considered, it would be a big mistake in my opinion

I agree.....I'm getting many a Ford (02-04 plate) needing new brake pipes just now.
With a 2 year test, the brake pedal might not be so firm

On the vast majority of vehicles, the CV joints are separate from the driveshaft and available on their own.
Small vehicles like some Saxo's, 106's etc the cv is forged as one piece.
Taking fitting time into consideration, an exchange driveshaft may work out cheaper for you.
