I have a switch dimmable one (though I'm lead to believe the "real" dimmable one operates in a similar way - but you can use a dimmer to control it in the same way as a switch dimmable)
It is ok, but you try teaching someone how to use it. User friendliness was not in Megamans dictionary the day they designed these.
IMO, the way forward in dimmable fluorescents is with control wiring, such as the 10 volt system used in commercial systems. Either this or lamp holders with L, SL and N, such that the SL tells the light what setting to come on at, with the L providing a fixed, stable voltage for the filaments to stay warm enough.
I've got four varilight(dimmer, not switch dimmer) ones and they are as good as gold
with high output at full, well pleased with them and they work brilliant with my x10 dimmer switches setup. Oh and welcome back Bas
I've replaced all my tungsten lamps which were on dimmers with the varilight dimmable CFL's (had to take out a second mortgage though!).
Very pleased with results. There is a slight delay on switch on, but you soon get used to it. Varilight state that you should check the dimmer loading ie for single lamp use dimmer rated at around 20W. I thought I'd see how long my 60W ones would last and so far so good (abut 3 months).
Hurrah, at long last an energy saving bulb that is some use!
The likes of megaman need to advertise to the general public, never mind to the trade. I bet its only electricians that have them in their homes, or that have heard of them!
