I want to replace a simple toggle switch on an existing two-way lighting circuit with a dimmer switch. Is is possible for this to be done on one of the switches only, and if so how does one go about it?

yes it can, take usual precautions with electricity, change switch, simple

HOWEVER please note my signature

please also get 2 way dimmer of correct rating (it will say on it b4 you buy it what its rating is)

Bear in mind as it will be 2 way, you can only dim from one end, and if you turn off at other end then back on it will still be dim

Make sure dimmer will fit in the wall box, or be prepared to change it.

Dimmer should have three terminals same as the existing switch. make sure which is which. one of the terminals connects to one or other of the remaining two, depending on switch positiion.
