Dimmer Switch load

I have a dimmer switch with the terminals L1, L2, variable load and fixed load.
Where do the black and red wires go please? The switch I am removing has 1,2 & 3, with the wires in 1 & 3.

Thanks for that breezer, got the light working, but the dimmer won't work.The unit has an on/off swith as well as a dimmer 'wheel'. The switch turns the light on and off but he wheel doesn't do anything. I have connected the black to fixed load terminal and red to L1.

very unusual, do you have a picture?

i agree with above post, pic would be nice, but its your comment of "i have connect to the fixed load side" that intrigues me.

A fixed load is not variable, that is why it will not dim, but i cant say much more without seeing a pic to confirm my thoghts.

i would try the other option if i were you, its often quicker

o.k., I have tried every combination now, and still the dimmer doesn't work. From all the postings I have read, i have understood that it doesn't matter which way round the black and red go, so long as they are not both in L1 & L2, or both not etc.. I know the switch was working two weeks ago when I removed it from my daughter's bedroom to replace it with a remote control one, so I don't think it's the switch. I didn't take any notice of where the wires were because I didn't think i would need it again.

Have you tried red to variable load and black to L1?

Just been and tried that. I get a slight dimming but hardly noticable.

One single bog standard room light!!!! It already had a dimmer switch on it that was broken but still dimming. This was supposed to be a temporary fill in until I get a new one!
