Dimmer Switch

I have changed my light switch to a dimmer switch.When i dim the light it will suddenly flicker then go bright then go dim again.It seems as if it has a mind of it's own.If i leave it on the high setting (Bright) no problem.
Any advice would be helpfull.

Is the dimmer correctly rated for the lighting load?
Dimmers don't function well if the load is below the minimum or above their maximum load.

Are the light fitting(s) dimmable?
Most low energy lamps are not dimmable. 12 volt lighting , powered by transformers require BOTH transformers suitable for use with dimmers AND dimmers suitable for use with the transformers.
