Dimmers and metal light fittings

Hi, this is probably a daft question but is it safe to use a dimmer to switch a metal (class 1) light fitting? Just curious as I was talking to a sparky today who said it was unsafe. I've not heard this before so would welcome your thoughts!

im not an authority on this but I cant see why not, as long as its properly earthed.
