Just thought i would mention B & Q now have a dimming CFL lamp

yes i know they are not ne but they are now in B & Q, claims to be able to go from 2- 100%

but you do need to switch it on and off a few times

cost £9

Is it a switch dimmable? Or a "real" dimmable (via dimmer switch)?

I really really hope they highlight the "SWITCH" dimmable bit if it is the former. Imagine how many people will buy it and put it in series with a dimmer :(

This technology shouldn't be allowed in the hands of the general public. The general public will always get it wrong. :(

done by on and off switching and waiting for it to cycle to your desired brigtness (or dimness) it says so on the box

the advert says switch dimmable in big letters in the corner. personally i thought it meant via a dimmer switch!

So, I fear, will many people. I doubt many will read the instructions. There are comprehensive instructions in the box. "Its a bulb, I dont need no darned instructions" BANG. www.diynot.com "my dimmer and CFL are fooked :( "

Fear not, your prayers have been answered!

Varilight make a cfl which can be used with an existing dimmer switch. I'm trialling it in my living room at the moment. They recommend using a 20W min load dimmer with it, but I'm seeing how my 60W gets on - so far so good.

I think megaman have also just brought out something similar

I know. But we're talking about the SWITCH dimmable CFLs being made available to the general public. There WILL be confusion.

if you put a SWITCH dimmable CFL on a dimmer you won't damage the lamp or the dimmer.........it will just flicker like a crazy thing!

The lamp is trying to strike up - its circuitry requires 230 volts, even when its dimmed to 2%. Therefore by lowering the voltage, the results will be unpredictable, as with dimming any other type of induction lamp (fluorescent or not). No guarantees can be made as to the useability of either dimmer or lamp afterwards, due to the complex circuitry involved in such equipment.
