I have been installing new Fixtures and Fittings in a disabled toilet in a care home in my spare time and one of the old dears had recently been a little heavy handed with the emegency pull cord and they could not shut the alarm off so the owner pull the wires out of the switch to shut it up.

I was asked it i could have a look at it and as they don't have many funds as they are a charity i thought i would give it a go rather than call a spark.

They are tiny telephone line size wires.. 6 wires twisted together in pairs.. yellow and green, black and blue and red and brown.

I took the cover off the "reset socket" and found the ends to the switch.

the y&g goes into common, b&b into -, and b&r into +.

thought i would be smart and do the same at the switch end however i have had little sucess.

Is this some thing anyone can help with please?

I will be kept in bread pudding for life if i can help them..

Back in the 80's I did some work for Cass electronics who used to install lot of nurse calls systems.

Mostly they were bespoke solutions and we worked to the diagram.

I'd suggest that each pull cord will be wired the same, so pop in to another room with a working pull cord and simply copy the wiring.

The pull cord will have power, 1 pair, a pair for lamp door side on / off and feeds to the desk / central panel for indication and reset.

It was 25 + years ago  so sorry if I can't be exact.

What make is it? I'd expect that the wiring will be as you say, if the wires have touched when they were removed could they have popped something? Is there a supply between +ve and -ve? Are you trying to fit a new switch or fix up the old switch?

firstly thanks fopr getting back.

am using the existing switch.

+ve is the blue and black and -ve is the red and brown yes?
with the yellow and green the common yes?

if thats the case i get 20v between +ve and -ve and when i touch the green and yellow to either of the other pairs the volt drops to 0.

how does that sound so far?

Can you find out the make? If you look at the back of the switch can you make out what the PCB is doing?

It is more likely
+ve red and brown
- ve blue and black
This is for a C-Tec system and may be similar.
sometimes the cores just pass through as a join and are not always connected to the accessory,
ie, +ve not connected to the switch.

So what was wrong with doing it the simple way

If the pullcord has been wired incorrectly then it may have blown it :( . I'm thinking there are only a couple or three components on a C-Tec pullcord so working out what the PCB is doing is pretty simple. I'll take a peep at one but will probably be on Monday now.
