just like every estate agent in the country, just like 99.9% of builders, gardeners, double glazing companies etc etc etc that work on domestic homes, WE like YOU put a " Work done by" sign for a month in the garden of clients with their blessing.
We got a call from ELLESMERE PORT PLANNING OFFICE, telling us to remove our illegal sign. ( They had received a complaint form a neighbour). We are talking 600 x 800mm on a fence.
credit crunch, massive unemployment on its way, banks collapse, war still on, global warming, rape pillage and pestilence across the land, and some sad g*t complains because he is jealous of his neighbour getting some work done on his home. makes me want to move to..... any bloody where frankly. I employ 20 men.... if I can't show off a bit what is it all for

The jobsworths are correct.

A local landscaper/blockpaver near me got fined in the Magistrates Court after a competitor wih a grudge went around fixing this other guys signs to various fences and railings.

The landscaper never even got any business from the signs - just a fine!

was your sign within the perimeter of the property you were working on?
i dont know what law the council could enforce to make you remove your sign.
we hang banners on our scaffolds on every job we do.
it sounds very petty to me, and certainly would have made me rage as well.

would that not be judged as fly posting as opposed to advertising your services from your place of work?

when one of your men takes a week off .ask the client which neighbour it was then park the van out side his house
alternativly wait till the council serves notice on you to remove your sign as they must do this before they can either remove it them selves or take you to court. Then people wonder why this Sh*t hole of a country is in the state its in.

Years ago the highway council ordered us to remove a sign at the corner of a busy road and the street leading to our showroom: it could distract drivers.

One week later the borough council offered businesses the option to 'sponsor' a roundabout and have signs put up (at a price of course!)

And signs on a roundabout aren't distracting??

Nah, Nah, borrow an Anne Summers van and park that outside his house.

find the street stop tap outside the council offices, shut it and poor post mix in.

buy the cheapest old banger that you can (the bigger the better) get it sign written as cheap as you can and park that opposite the house of the complainer - you can leave it there indefinately so long as it is insured and taxed!

Just don't EVER stick a sign on a fence belonging to Network Rail. We didn't realise the fence was owned by them, they give you 24 hours to remove the sign and then they send a surveyor out to take a picture of the sign which costs £130 and then you are charged £750 per week rental

I think you need planning permission for a sign(?) My mate has a warning from the council to take his sign down unless it's not bigger than 300mm x 300mm which don't need planning!

managed to find this on the interactive planning portal, i guess you could argue that it's a temperary notice?!?!?

Planning Permission
You may need to apply for advertisement consent to display an advertisement bigger than 0.3 square metres on the front of, or outside, your property.

So you are unlikely to need consent for a sign with your house name or number on it, or even a sign saying 'Beware of the dog'. Temporary notices up to 0.6 square metres relating to local events, such as street parties and concerts, may also be displayed for a short period.

There are different rules for estate agents' boards, but, in general, these should not be bigger than 0.5 square metres. You can get further advice from the local planning authority.

The planning regime for larger, professional adverts, signs for businesses and so on is complex.

All outdoor advertisements must comply with five 'standard conditions'.

They must:

be kept clean and tidy
be kept in a safe condition
have the permission of the owner of the site on which they are displayed(this includes the Highway Authority if the sign is to be placed on highway land)
not obscure, or hinder the interpretation of, official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport
be removed carefully where so required by the planning authority.

Even 0.3m2 could be quite a decent size in the right proportions.

In a small village near to me a lady bougt a fair sized detached property and made it into a Yoga centre. There was no change to the external appearance of the building and she put up a small sign, not to attract clients but more to indicate which house to go to.

Well some nosey barst complained about this sign and the battle was on, the case went full distance with appeals and all sorts and she lost and had to take the sign down.

Well they say revenge is a dish best served cold.

She got decorators in and painted the outside of her house bright orange, she bought an old escort van and had that painted bright orange and had a huge advert for her business sign written on it and left it on the road outside.

She changed the name of the house to "The Orange House"

The snobby neighbours went mental but there wasn't a thing they could do about it

It is still there now.

Years ago when I worked for the council I know many signs were confiscated until fine was paid. The local burger van was often the target and we would hear the order on the radio for it to be removed and we would often call in and warn them.

But I know that you can get away with a vehicle sign where any permanent structure is not allowed and you see scores of vans and trailers parked in fields next to the motorway.

But some times you can see why as the signs are not removed and distract from those which you should have read and find yellow lines in front of your house.

Now I believe where one has a dropped kerb one can no longer park against it. Sounds good to begin with but it is normal to block the person you are visiting drive so as not to upset any neighbours now we have one car between two houses that can be parked on road. Just too many laws now.

Just as a payback (well not really as its miles away in Cheshire BC's area) We put a 2.4mtr x 600mm sign on the fence of a major roundabout near to the M56-A556 juction. Brilliant white with our web address on it, nothing else. Got three enquiries and two jobs in one week, web traffic up by 3% and it was there for 6 weeks. Great...... just shows that some councils have better things to do. (like adding 7% to our latest poll tax bill).
