I'm looking to make a very simple desk. Going to buy some legs, and fix a desk on top. Most likely one of those electrical raising legs with a centre beam for support, which makes sagging a non issue.

My thoughts are, buy 18mm thick OSB and screw it onto the legs. Question is, what should I use to fill in the OSB to make it a smooth surface?
Or should I be considering ply, or mdf? Or even a kitchen worktop (I've got one in the shed)?

The kitchen worktop you already have will be better suited than the OSB you'll have to buy
Yeah I think so too. But, they are only 60cm wide and I think having a deeper desk will make it a bit user friendly.

scaffold boards recycled or new for a bit off interest 227x38mm
I'll look into this. A bit more complex than varnishing a board then screwing it on. I also saw layers of pallet board being used.

18mm melamine faced chipboard (MFC), or better still 18mm MF-MDF (melamine faced MDF: probably from a specialist sheet material supplier or a shop fitting firm) and edge banding (iron on). Comes in sheets 8 x 4ft (2440 x 1220mm) and is very smooth, unlike OSB which you will never get a smooth edge on.

Some distributors can supply wood veneered MDF in 8 x 4 ft sheets (in various veneers), complete with matching iron on veneer edging.

Then there is always 18mm hardwood plywood, again in 8 x 4ft sheets, although it is a tad pricey (the nicest stuff is 18mm birch plywood, but the last price I saw on that stuff was north of £200/sheet)

Depending on where you go they may do a cut to size service as well. Post your location and someone may be able to point you to a supplier in your locale. I'm based between Manchester and Leeds, so I know a number of the guys in my patch, but I doubt any of my suppliers would deliver to Exeter, for example!

Almost the price of Trespa, if the OP wanted something particularly hard wearing ;)

Or 12mm solid laminate worktop - the breakfast bar variety I've been looking at recently comes in 3m x 930mm pieces (at £350 a pop, before discount or VAT, so that may not be going into my kitchen)
