Hey fellas, has anyone got experience or knowledge of doing a 'self build' orangery? Not really to just save on cost, but I fancy the challenge next spring. Can anyone recommend a research resource? I have a fairly large house and would be looking for an orangery sized approx 7 x 5m

Alternatively can anyone recommend an orangery specialist in Worcestershire / South Midlands?

Cheers.

I have.

It's just an extension with more windows

Or a conservatory with less glass.

Not many people grow oranges in them.

Hey Woody, thanks for the reply. Any advice that you can share? What sort of size did you build etc?

Please ignore my citrusly challenged friend. He thought a 2m x 2m orangery was a satsumary. Seriously.

Orangeries have been snapped up by the marketers as a more useful conservatory. But you can see the various designs from a quick Google image search, and then the size would be to suit your needs.

Larger spans will need deeper beams in the roof, and the key thing is not the make the roof depth look out of proportion - especially if you're having the obligatory sliding folding doors along the back elevation.

The style should fit in with your house, so that comes down to detailing.

You may or may not need planning permission, and would not need building regulations unless you remove the doors through to the house.
