Do acoustic tiles on the ceiling work?

Whichever ones work best to block out noise.
Complicated problem. Lots of variables. 15mm acoustic plasterboard will provide the most mass, but fixing directly could cause transmission of low frequencies.
If it's your teenage son up there playing his Showaddywaddy LP's too loud, then it probably won't make much difference.

What sort of noise are you trying to block out?
Ceiling tiles are designed to control sound levels with the room, as used in offices and the like.
They are of no use to stop sound entering the room from somewhere else.
