There was a programme on earlier in the year that talked about our reliance on oil for farming and it contained a report from Cuba which used to have a similiar agriculture to the westen world. However, when they lost their access to cheap oil they had to ,and did do, reorganise their farms to cope. Point is change is possible , however the growing world population could very well be the spanner in the works.

Yes I've seen the Rebecca Hoskins film. The problem is that the UK is way overcrowded. We need two and a half times our landmass dedicated to growing food to feed us all.

Didn't you look at those videos earlier on in the thread? You should do - you'll see how our economy works - and how sick it is. Starvation for your grandchildren is a distinct possibility.

Yes I watched the first one....it was very interesting, will try to get to watch the other one and will also watch the Rebecca Hosking link.

This is the bottom line folks- too many people on the planet. Estimates are that in the modern oil era it takes 10 calories of energy(oil) to produce 1 calorie of food. That's why I don't give to charities for the third world, if they've enough energy to keep pumping out bairns then they don't need feeding, let their populations rebalance the way nature intended.
I used to think eugenics was a nasty evil concept but now I'm not so sure. Famines and starvation are as old as the earth it's just now we have global media to see it. If the famines today on the horn of Africa happened 400years ago, well, tough luck.
We do need a drastic reduction in population to have a moderate chance of survival.
Wonder why the current drive to biofuels is happening? To save our precious environment or to take food from the third world and speed this process up....Population reduction alongside the Bill Gates Foundation/AIDS/vaccination/chemtrails/GM food etc....
I think the "powers that be" already are acting on this, a genotype specific lethal virus would be just the thing eh???

I agree with you on the population reduction but still find the 'tough luck' attitude harsh ...... maybe its just me ..... but they are still people after all.

I hope that when we are all starving as per Joe's prediction that people don't just look and think 'tough luck'. When I look at the smiling faces of my gorgeous grandchildren I would absolutely hate that to be their fate.

The problem for the UK is that we are heavily dependent on imported food to survive. When things get tough (as everyone agrees they must - apart from JohnD) then the countries that export food will no longer be able to do so (no more intensive farming) so they will keep all the food they grow to feed their own. The UK is ridiculously overcrowded and there is a very real chance that your grandkids will starve. Even if they don't they'll live with Dickensian poverty all of their short lives. It really is that serious, but people just don't want to know because there is nothing we can do to change it. I might go back to Oz.

Not a lot. The world needs to lose 5 billion people.

Go and live in Poland.

Whenever I go anywhere in Bristol, I hear Polish being spoken. Usually by women with several children in tow.

Poland must be bloody empty, apart from a few old people.

Agreed - so how do we do that? Please don't answer as we might be banned.
Contraception in all countries would be a good start.
