Hi all I need to find out if i need to move my meter . getting extension put on the house and builder has the founds and the frame up.The sparky is doing the wiring and says when are you moving the meter box ! first ive been told about it, nothing on the drawings about this. The   builder said we will keep it inside ? is this a no no will electricity supplier need it on an outer wall or can i keep it in my new kitchen?

Cheers just getting conflicting info from builder and sparky will they
not need access as it was outside before extension built or will they just need to arrange access to do a reading?

When the meter reader comes and can't gain access he/she will either leave a card to either fill in yourself and display in your window or arrange another appointment.
My supplier lets me enter readings via their website.

Cheers sounds like a silly question now , but I did think the supplier would get a bit anti -enclosing one of there meters

You have to ask yourself how many meters are internal and what difference would it make if yours was.
You shouldn't have a problem.

Ours is internal. Always has been, probably always will be. Meter reader comes maybe every half a year. We put our readings in online. The official reader's figures are simply used to see we're not lying and getting free electric. Of course, theoretically if we were always out, we could get away with it

Glad to see you live north of the border.

It should not be a problem- as long as the meter and electricity board stuff is still acessible, and not interfered with.

Call them for advice (if it is Scottish Power be prepared to be transferred about 7 times and to have to explain yourself each time from the start to a different person)

as you live in Scotland it is YOUR responsability to make sure the electrical work is certified, not the builders.

Where the proposals include electrical works an appropriate Electrical Compliance Certificate must be signed by a competent electrician.

Two links you need to read:
page 10 of pdf
http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/dundeecity/uploaded_publications/publication_222.pdf

The guidance the council use to check compliance:
http://www.sbsa.gov.uk/pdfs/Electrical Guidance for Verifiers 29Mar06.pdf

List if registered compamies in Scotland:
http://www.sbsa.gov.uk/register/SearchCo.asp?T=Construction&ID=2

List of people registered:
http://www.sbsa.gov.uk/register/ListAC.asp

In a nutshell if the electrical person doing the work is not listed you may have a head ache.

Hope this helps.

cheers baldy the electrician is cosha he was the one that raised the subject as the builder had said he would box it in which i was a bit concerned with as it will be in our kitchen and a bit of a pain to gain access when needed i was wondering if the hydro elec company would charge the same if i just wanted the meters turned as they would then end up in my under stair cupboard.I was an Auto sparky in a past life but not got too much of a clue about the ins and outs of mains requirments.
aye its good up north ,but the extension costs are getting higher and higher with the missus goin banzai at mfi wee the new kitchen and bedroom! so a cheap option would be ideal.

just about to go for an extension myself.

Got 2 bedrooms and 1 lounge
Getting (hopefully) 1 lounge / kitchen diner- along 1 side of house. and 4 bedrooms and an office

best of luck with the building will phone the hydro tommorrow
cheers
