I have a British Gas 330+ boiler (Installed by previous owner) and it gives me the option to set a temperature which I was presuming was for the central heating but then I also have a Satchwell thermostat (situated on the stairs which looks like its been there since the house was built in 1974).

Which one of these controls the central heating as I'm very confused and don't seem to be able to find out the answer.

Cheers folks, Crofty

A boiler always has its own thermostat to control the temperature of the water that comes out of it. It will normally be set quite high - maybe 85°C - because the radiators are designed to run hot.

Meanwhile, the room thermostat does what its name suggests and controls the air temperature in the room. This will usually be somewhere around the 20°C mark (your choice) which is obviously a lot lower than the working temperature of the radiators. (If you tried to heat your room with radiators working at 20°C, you would need to cover whole walls with them.   )

So, to recap, the room thermostat is the one you adjust to get the temperature you want. It achieves this by turning the boiler and pump on or off. When the boiler is on, it's own thermostat controls the temperature of the water going to the radiators. It achieves this by regulating the gas supply to the burner. Simples! :) :) :)

Very simples when it's set like that. Thanks :-)

Off topic I know but when are 5mm wood bits bigger than 5mm masonry bits? Is it to take into account the vibrations from the hammer action?

5mm is 5mm,(its the diameter) the difference is what they are designed to drill through.

5mm wood bit that is bloody small for a wood bit
Not for this sort it's not:
